Movie Review: Rio

Movie Review: Rio
Rating: G
Run Time: 90 mins

What it is about:
Blu is a domesticated Blue Macaw that can’t fly, from the Rio de Janeiro, as a baby bird he ends up in Minnesota as Linda’s pet. Blue also happens to be the last male Blue Macaw in existence, so Tulo asks Linda to bring Blu to Rio to mate with Jewel, the last female Blue Macaw in existence. Upon arriving in Rio, Blu and Jewel are stolen within 24 hours by bird smugglers. They are to be sold to the highest bidder. The movie fallows Blu and Jewel as they try to escape the smugglers, Blu is trying to get back to Linda and Jewel back to the rainforest.

What I thought about the movie:
It was cute! I decided to have some auntie time with my niece and decided to take my 3 year old niece to a movie, so I picked the only kids movie that I knew was out. (I usually don’t pay much attention to them) The movie was very colorful, it had some catchy songs. I liked the Latin vibe, since it does take place in Brazil during Carnival. There were some parts that I thought my niece might get scared of the “bad men” but she never did. And the movie seemed to hold the interest of an ADD 3 year old. The movie also was pretty funny, I found myself laughing quite a bit. I could tell there were some jokes that went over my nieces head, but she laughed anyway. J Overall I’d say it was an enjoyable movie.

Must Read: Any Man of Mine – Rachel Gibson

So it is no secret that I love me some Rachel Gibson, she never disappoints me. Every book she has written I have thoroughly enjoyed if not completely loved. This one I love, it’s not my favorite but it is definitely up there.

Review:
In this book there is Passion, Romance, Sarcasm, Emotions and Humor. Rachel Gibson has a way of making her characters human and real. They have insecurities and hang ups just like everyone else and it really makes you relate to the characters and Any Man Of Mine is no exception. You get flash backs to Las Vegas, and who doesn’t love Vegas?!  Autumn doesn’t give Sam any slack just because he’s a hot shot hockey player, when he’s being an A-hole she calls him on it. Her number one priority is her son and any mother can relate to that. When Sam stops being such am irresponsible douche bag you can totally see why he is irresistible.  It is a quick passionate read with emotional complexities and you wont be disappointed!

Must Read: Hermann Hesse - Siddhartha

Hermann Hesse - Siddhartha

It is a about a young mans journey of self and spiritual discovery. I really feel like everyone should read this book at least once in their life, esp if you are on a self journey to some sort of personal discovery. It is a fairly short book and a quick read, it would only take a few hours of your life and make an impact. You can even read the eBook for free, you can download it to your computer or your eReader!

From Goodreads.com:
In the shade of a banyan tree, a grizzled ferryman sits listening to the river. Some say he's a sage. He was once a wandering shramana &, briefly, like thousands of others, he followed Gotama the Buddha, enraptured by his sermons. But this man, Siddhartha, was not a follower of any but his own soul.

Born son of a Brahmin, Siddhartha was blessed in appearance, intelligence & charisma. In order to find meaning in life, he discarded his promising future for the life of a wandering ascetic. Still, true happiness evaded him. Then a life of pleasure & titillation merely eroded away his spiritual gains until he was just like all the other "child people," dragged around by his desires.

Song on Repeat: The Pretty Reckless - Just Tonight

My Current Song on Repeat:

The Pretty Reckless - Just Tonight

So again I have iTunes free weekly songs to thank for this find. I downloaded the video ot even knowing what it was, I had never heard of the Pretty Reckless, but hey why not, I could always delete it if I didnt like it. When it first came on I was pleasently surprised the singer had a good voice and it had a certain moodiness about it.  When I started to watch the video I quickly realized that the singer is Taylor Momsen from the show Gossip Girl.  Now, usually I dislike actors turned musicans, the only other person I can think of that I feel did it successfully is Jerad Leto (Front man of 30 Seconds to Mars), who was on My So Called Life and small roles in various movies. I can say with confidence he is a way better singer than he was actor. But I digress, for only being 17, Taylor has a certain soulfullness that is unexpected of someone of her age. Like any good front person she can inject emotion into the words she is singing. The band does well of backing up the moodiness of Taylors voice, and it all works together.

I do have to admit:
The video, not so great. Poor Taylor, I don't know what happened to her fasion sense but it certainly escaped her. Hopefully, she's just being a rebellous teenager and she will get back on track, because her look lately and in this video is not working for her.

There is a line in this song that just kills me, every time I hear it I have to turn it up and sing loudly (and not well) along.

Just tonight
Do you understand who I am?
Do you wanna know?
Can you really see through me now?

Product I love: Gold Canyon

Gold Canyon:

What it is:
They are primarily a candle company but they also make reed diffusers, potpourri, lotion, basically anything that smells good, they make.

“Gold Canyon provides The World's Finest® candles, candle scents, home d├ęcor and environmentally friendly home cleaning products.”  www.goldcanyon.com

Why I love them so much:
They have the most incredible smells that last for a long time. I have never found candles or diffusers that last as long as Gold Canyon or are as strong, including Yankee Candles. They have a huge selection of smells, to choose from. My favorites are Sweet Pea, Pomegranate and Ginger Lime.  A lot of people I know really love the Birthday Cake and Fresh Linen smells.  I personally buy the reed diffusers, which sadly they don’t have as large of a selection of smells but they still have my Ginger Lime which lasts for about 3-4 months.

Movie Review: Your Highness

Your Highness
Rating: R
Run Time: 102 mins

What it is about:
This is a tale of two brothers. The first Fabious (James Franco) is the eldest brother and heir to the throne, he is the “golden boy” of the two brothers. He is often on quests and always wins. The kingdom adores him and he can do no wrong in his father’s eyes. Thadeous (Danny McBride) is the opposite. He is the slacker brother who can do nothing right in his father’s eyes. When Fabious’s future bride is stolen by a powerful sorcerer in order to fulfill a prophecy Fabious is determined to get his love back. The king demands that Thadeous accompany his brother on this quest, for this is his last chance…

What I thought:
I was expecting something like “Robin Hood Men in Tights” but this flick so was not. The beginning I sat there wondering why I spent money on this film. It did however get more entertaining but it was not nearly as funny as expected. The “F” word is casually thrown about and awkwardly placed as though to be funny, but really just fell flat. The comedy of the film heavily relied on thinly veiled sexual innuendos that weren’t really all that funny. I kind of reminded me of that age tweens reach where they can turn any statement into something sexual. I kind of felt like I was in 6th grade again. Natalie Portman was probably the saving grace of this film, she had some excellent scenes where she was kicking butt and taking names. Zooey Deschanel who played Fabious’s love barely spoke in this film which completely under-utilized her comedic abilities. I have seen other films with Dechanel where she was a complete scene stealer and highly funny, yet she barely spoke in this film. James Franco who is usually a great actor in whatever role he is in (at least in my unprofessional) opinion, was underwhelming. I think he was supposed to over act on purpose but again it wasn’t amusing. And there was this creepy scene with the wise wizard which I really could have gone the rest of my life without seeing. Danny McBride I think was supposed to be the comedic force in this film but he really wasn’t that funny. He got a couple of chuckles from me, but nothing worth $10 and almost 2 hours of my time. His side kick Courtney (Rasmus Hardiker) was more funny than McBride. Overall, were as the movie wasn’t terrible, if I had never seen this movie I would have been alright with that.

Christina Aguilera - Bound to You

I dont always like Christina Aguilera, her songs are usually hit or miss with me, but when I heard this song I was floored! I love when Miss Aguilera actually uses her voice and she really blows on this song. It is so soulful and you can really feel the emotion pouring out! If you are looking for a good love song, look no further.

Music Review - Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears:

Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears is a band out of Austin, TX. The band is fronted by Black Joe Lewis who also plays the lead guitar; the sound is a fusion of blues and rock n’ roll. The sound is often gritty and the lyrics are very honest and not for the fainthearted. I guess you can say he’s “keeping it real”. I’m loving the horn section it’s a great compliment to the rock n’ roll guitar playing giving it a soulful bluesy twist. I have seen Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears several times in concert and I can tell you they are even better live! They put on high energy, electric show! Black Joe Lewis is charismatic on stage and his band mates are no slouches either.

Black Joe Lewis is surprisingly young for someone with such a soulful sound. I’d say he’s in his mid 20’s; so I foresee a long fruitful career for Mr. Lewis and his band mates.

“Like his forebears, Lewis writes from direct, often bitter experience with unflinching veracity. The songs of Scandalous are littered with the debris of age-old issues: hard times and one-night stands, lying and cheating, redemption and revenge. Gritty, raunchy and real, his music is not for the squeamish, but experiencing it fully can be genuinely cathartic.” –blackjoelewis.com

Movie Review: Hanna

Movie Review: Hanna
Run time: 111 minutes
Rating: PG-13
Distributed by Focus Features,
Sony Pictures Entertainment.

What it is about:
A young girl Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) lives in the wilderness of Finland with her father (Eric Bana) most of her life training to be the perfect assassin. When the time becomes right her and her father, reenter the world, to extract revenge for the death of her mother. Their Target is Marissa (Cate Blanchett) who works for a government agency and killed Hanna’s mother. Hanna has to enter the world after extreme isolation, where she knew no one but her father and didn’t even have any electricity, so really she is seeing the rest of the world for the first time. But hard on her trail is Marissa, who is trying to capture Hanna, before Hanna can kill her.

What I thought:
So I am still sitting here processing this movie. I liked it, but I’m not sure how much I liked it. If that makes any sense… I went to this movie having only a very small idea of what it was about, I hadn’t seen any previews, I had just read the little blurb on Harkins movie descriptions, so I had no preconceived notions about what this movie should be like.

So it has the feel of a Bourne movie, but this is no Bourne movie.  The action sequences were interesting in that the assassin is a teenage girl that does not look like she can take down a 200 lb man but does with ease. The action scenes themselves were not always very well choreographed and looked a little forced, but they were still enjoyable none the less. What I really found intriguing about the movie is seeing the world for the first time through Hanna’s eyes. She had never even seen a car before, or had electricity so she has to adapt to the outside world and fast. I remember thinking during the movie that not much happens, but I was in no way bored. Marissa, you never really get a handle on, except that she is pretty creepy. I never really knew if she was trying to kill the Hanna or protect Hanna is some misguided tragic capacity. The way the movie ended makes you think that they are planning on a Hanna 2, which if they do, I’ll probably watch it.

Current Song on REPEAT

So, I must say that I adore iTunes free weekly songs, I have found some pretty decent songs that way and hey it's free so if the song sucks no harm no foul! My current song on repeat was one such song. It is a fast paced, kind of techno, pop, rock, mix. But its infectious and its my song of the minute.

I love my Kindle: And let me tell you why!

So, I’ve had my Kindle now for a few months and I have to say I’m in LOVE!
  •  So first there is how lightweight it is. I’d have to say it weighs less than a paperback.
  •  It is so easy to hold! With a book, you have to use two hands to keep it open and turn pages. With a Kindle you can hold it with one hand or lay it down and just click a button to turn pages. Lazy I know, but when it is cold and you’re curled in a blanket having only one hand exposed instead of two is preferable.
  • So for those of us that read in public, while you are waiting or on public transit, no one can tell what you are reading. You know those annoying people that try to get a glimpse of the cover or ask to see the cover, or have read the book and want to discuss it right in the middle of whatever sentence you are reading… Well you don’t have that problem with the Kindle. And if you get one of the leather covers it just looks like you are looking at a planner.
  • Shopping! You know I had to get in shopping somewhere. You have a whole bookstore at your finger tips! A few clicks a few searches and 30 seconds to download and you have a brand new book waiting for you. No getting in the car, wasting gas, or wandering around looking for your section. It’s instant gratification at its finest!(although I do have to admit I still like to go into the bookstore and wonder around and look at the pretty covers)
  • Tons of FREE reads! If you go to amazon.com there is a free eBook section and there are tons of them! I think I downloaded something like 30 free books just because I could!
  • Free up space. I had books everywhere! I live in a fairly small space, and there were paperbacks laying everywhere. I was able to tuck those all away and now I just have one small device lying wherever I put it.
  • Kindle App. So I have a smart phone, the Droid X to be exact (LOVE my phone but that’s another story), so I downloaded the Kindle App on my phone. My actual Kindle and the Kindle App on my phone sync so if I want to read on my phone, I can do so without missing a beat. And I thought the font on my phone would be tiny and hard to read but it’s actually a decent size and easy to read.
  • Never losing your place. Speaking of syncing, the Kindle keeps your place. You can go back, skip around and there is an option to go back to the furthest place read. And as previously mentioned, it sync’s to your phone and there is now a computer app too that you can download for your PC.
  • Go Green! So not that I am a total Green nut, but I do try to practice Reduce, Reuse, Recycle as much as I can. I feel better knowing that I am not using more paper resources, and there is no gas used to drive my book around. It may not be much, but I feel like it can make a small difference. I mean if you think about it, there is a LOT of paper in each book. If everyone moves to eBooks then how many trees can be saved?

Movie Review - I am Four

I am Four
Rating: PG-13
Run Time: 109 mins

What it is about:
John and various other aliases (Alex Pettyfer) is an alien hiding from other alien forces that invaded his home planet and wiped out his entire race with the exception of him, the 8 other kids like him and their guardians. The alien invaders are hunting down each of the kids in order.  The first 3 have already been killed and are close on John’s heels. John’s protector Henri (Timothy Olyphant) moves himself and John to a small Ohio town where they can hopefully blend in with the locals. There John meets Sarah (Dianna Agron) an intriguing young woman whom he just can’t stay away from even though it draws attention to the local high school bully Mark (Jake Abel). John also starts to come into his powers and these changes also start drawing attention. John also befriends Sam (Callan McAuliffe) whose father disappeared years ago while hunting down rumors of aliens. Sam’s father is the reason Henri brought John to the small town, he was helping Henri find the other Numbers. As the aliens get closer and closer to John so does Number 6 (Teresa Palmer), who arrives just in time.

What I Thought:

Effects/Action:
The action scenes and effects on this movie are excellent! The movie starts immediately with an action scene that I had wished would have lasted a little longer, but it transitions quickly. The first half of the movie is fairly action free but once John starts coming into his powers it takes off running! The last action scene of the movie is a dozy!

Plot:
Invading aliens is not a new concept but they manage to get is pretty fresh. The first half of the movie is kind of slow and setting everything up, it looks as though they are preparing to make this a series. So I am Five should take off running. Think the X-men series.  I like the dynamic between John and Henri, it is not quite father and son, but it is close. Henri orders John around and John doesn’t obey, that’s about as close as you can get to a family as you can get without actually being family. J High School is John way to be “normal” in his otherwise chaotic abnormal life. The Ohio high school is the stereo typical movie high school. There are the jocks (Mark) and the geeks (Sam) and the jocks terrorize the geeks of course. Now I am originally from Indiana in not quite a small town but we would not be considered a large city either. And high school wasn’t really like this, but I guess it could be like that somewhere… John is drawn to Sarah, it’s easy to understand why, she is beautiful, fresh faced, wholesome, Midwestern girl. Although I never understood why action movies always throw in a love story, Hollywood, its ok to forgo the love story every now and then, I promise! Now the best part of this movie in my opinion is Number 6. She is a total bad a$$! Damn I want to be her! LOL!

Acting:
The acting was ok, nothing spectacular but no real complaints either. It looks like a young fresh, fresh, cast, who I look forward to seeing in future endeavors except Pettyfer in Beastly (See Beastly review).

Movie Review – Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch
Run Time: 109 mins
Rated: PG-13
Studio: Warner Bros.

What it is about:
Basically a young woman’s wealthy mother is killed by her stepfather in order to gain the funds. Upon finding out that everything was left to her daughters the Step Father than kills the youngest daughter and has the oldest daughter “Baby Doll” committed to an insane asylum.

Once in the asylum things get more convoluted. You are taken from a dreary run down hospital setting to a brighter group home feel, where the girls are basically slave labor and “dancers” for the rich. Baby Doll must get out of the asylum before the “High Roller” comes for her.

When Baby Doll dances she enters a trance where her and the other girls fight to obtain 4 items for their freedom. The 5th item only Baby Doll can obtain.

What I thought:
Disclaimer: First of all leave the children at home please! I saw several parents who brought their young children to the movie and they were crying and were scared. This is not appropriate for young children as indicated by the PG-13, I would even go as far as to say it should probably be more of an R but I may be biased in that opinion.

Effects: This is the reason to see this movie! They are fantastic. There are plenty of explosions and action sequences to keep everyone happy!  I did not see this movie in 3-D but I bet it would be even better in 3-D and I’m not usually a 3-D fan. When the girls are in their alternate reality it is non-stop action and effects, you are taken into different scenarios for each item that needs to be retrieved and each scenario is better than the last. And as a bonus the soundtrack was pretty bad a$$, at least it was to my musical tastes. I am thinking of purchasing it. J

Plot Line: It was better than I thought it would be, I don’t go to see this movie for the plat I went more for the effects. However, I was pleasantly surprised; I thought it would be a lot worse. Like along the lines of Red Riding Hood or any of the Twilight movies. The movie kept going fast enough that you never really had a chance to get bored during “down time” meaning between action sequences.

Acting: Some of the acting was better than others. Jenna Malone, Abbie Cornish, Carla Gugino, Scott Glenn and a surprisingly good performance from Oscar Isaac who I don’t think I’ve seen him in anything before. They put in good performances that carried the rest of the cast through the movie. Baby Doll was played by Emily Browning who certainly looked the part but didn’t really have the acting chops quite yet to pull off a lead.  She wasn’t necessarily bad but was flat. There is one scene between Abbie Cornish and Jenna Malone (they are sisters in the movie) that really sticks out and I admit I was close to crying. Vanessa Hudgens is thankfully there more for filler because she is not best of actresses.

Welcome!

Welcome to my new blog! I am Amanda, but for this blog you can call me by my alter ego Sweet Pea! ;p

The purpose of this blog is to allow me an outlet for my ADD on things I love and I hope there are others out there that are just as ADD and will like my random ramblings!

I ADORE music. I love all kinds of music! I am no music snob; I listen to everything from pop, to metal, to hip hop to a tiny bit of country. See this is where my ADD kicks in again.

Books! Love them! I’ve been a book nerd for as long as I could remember. It is not uncommon for me to stay up all night if a novel really grabs me. I have two other book review blogs, so for this blog I’ll just post the MUST reads and why they are a must read. If you would like to visit my other book blogs they are www.paranormalromancenovel.com and www.goodromancenovels.blogspot.com .

I am a total shopaholic… It is bad!  Thankfully my sister and mom share my problem so I don’t lack for shopping buddies. Even my 3.5 year old niece is turning into a shopaholic. I guess you could say it runs in the family. We love the bargain! The % off the already marked down is my best friend, but not my checking accounts best friend more like enemy. LOL

I’ll probably post some movies on here as well. I go through phases where I go to the movies a lot and then don’t go again for months.  But I guess that has more to do with Hollywood putting out a bunch of crap at the same time and then having a moment of where they actually put out some decent stuff. I’ll watch just about any genre except horror! I DO NOT watch horror flicks. I am way too paranoid for that. I’d be up all night hiding over the covers listening to every noise. Yes, I’m THAT girl.

Winesday! So since Wednesday night is my Friday, I have made Wednesday, Winesday! It’s a perfect day to curl up on the couch and read, blog or watch TV with a glass of wine, or beer, or any other preference. I may even make this a meme, we’ll see…

Hope you enjoy!
